If you want to be a better free throw shooter, you gotta step on the line. A faster swimmer? Gotta jump in the pool. A stronger writer? Yep, you guessed it - you’ve gotta get words on the page. I’ve found that there’s no substitute for daily practice.

You’ll be surprised at the way the words pile up when you write for ten minutes a day. To help you make that magic happen, here are dozens of interesting writing prompts covering a variety of topics, genres, purposes and formats, as well as resources to implement and support your efforts.

Sometimes we all need a little break, am I right?!?!? Luckily, when you use the brain breaks you find on this page, you’ll accomplish more than just a time out - you’ll also be building background knowledge and classroom comradery. Sounds like a win-win to me!

Pick a prompt, set the timer and go! Really, it’s that simple. I like to start with 5 minutes of writing time at the beginning of the year… and add a minute a week, until we are writing for ten minutes daily. If students are feeling stuck or struggling, check out the journal writing tips that are included at the front of each pack of prompts.

Accomplish more than just a time out - you’ll also be building background knowledge and classroom comradery.
